From the Counsellor’s Desk – Star Trek and Mental Health

Gene Roddenberry did not shy away from addressing issues which were uncomfortable or current. This tradition has continued on into present incarnations of the franchise as characters press further into the final frontier. It should come as no surprise, therefore, that mental health issues were woven into scripts long before it was mainstream. Here then, are just a few examples: The Original Series episode, "The Doomsday Machine", featured Commodore Matt Decker losing his crew despite taking the action he believed [...]

Captain’s Log – Stardate 202108.31

As the Earth's month of August comes to a close, the World is again in a state of confusion.  Canada has various stages of re-opening from Corona Virus, Ontario has stopped in Stage 3.  The US is being hit by another major outbreak forcing "lockdowns".   That being said, the USS Nomad is going strong.  After some time to recuperate from the Regional Summit, well-deserved rests were taken.  As some days on a Starship seem mundane and repetitive to me, as [...]

Space Science in my Backyard Episode 2

The National Research Council's Algonquin Radio Observatory (ARO) is one of two major radio astronomy facilities in Canada where scientists study the sun, stars and distant galaxies in wavelengths beyond those of visible light. Begun in 1959, the Observatory is situated deep in Ontario's Algonquin Provincial Park, away from manmade interference. The site contains a collection of instruments designed for research in several phases of radio astronomy: an array of 32 parabolic reflectors, each 3m in diameter, scans the [...]

Captain’s Log – Stardate 202107.30

This month was eventful to put it lightly. A new ship launched from the Nomad named the Volaris with 7 crew members on board.  We are the new support ship. The Cerberus, the other ship we are the support ship for, submitted paperwork for early commission and was able to have the time in shakedown reduced to 6 months. I am very proud of both these new chapters. Much of the crew put significant effort into projects. The Space station with the FB [...]

From the Counselors Desk – PTSD Awareness Part 2

In thinking about this series on PTSD, I reached out to friends and family who have served and who are currently serving in the military for inspiration. Each story is different. Each person took me on a different journey. One person I reached out to was New York Times bestselling Science Fiction author, former US Marine and volunteer at the National World War 1 Museum, Dayton Ward. Dayton graciously offered to share his thoughts on this important topic. Here, then, [...]

From the Counselors Desk – PTSD Awareness Part 1

This blog series is intended to raise public awareness about issues related to PTSD, reduce the stigma associated with PTSD, and help ensure that those suffering from these invisible wounds receive proper treatment. Rather than quote facts and figures in this post, I have decided to tell a story... When I was about three years old, a young man named Mike came to live with our family. Mike was a US citizen attending school in Canada, and his parents were [...]
